Monday afternoon, May 25
Sean has fully recovered from surgery performed a little more than a week ago. Without going in to too much detail, the staff at Helene Fuld were able to re-connect some pieces of Sean that they had borrowed about 4 months ago. Sean’s noggin is once again well rounded.
Sean has since been transported back to Kessler and his progress continues to be slow and steady. His cognitive skills are very sharp. You can talk to Sean about any subject and he quickly and decisively absorbs and responds. Physically, he is still struggling with use of his legs, his right hand, and speaking. He is working very hard on all though.
This weekend, Frank, Kathy and Tim were able to take Sean out to lunch at a nearby restaurant down the road from Kessler. My little friend Haley and I greeted them upon their return from lunch. Sean recognized us from about 50 feet away and gave a big wave. He was able to help out a little by moving his legs when Frank shifted him from the car to the wheelchair. Inside, one of Sean’s therapists asked Sean what he had for lunch. After a brief pause, Sean mouthed the words “cheeseburger”. He wasn’t able to produce a sound but all else looked good.
On my way out, Sean shook my hand, with his RIGHT HAND.

Monday Morning, May 10
Sean spent the better part of Mother’s Day at home. He seemed very happy to be there as he reclined on the Lazy Boy. We were lucky enough to get by and hang with the Nemazie's and eat some pizza and pastries. Kathy and Frank were really glad that Sean was allowed to make the trip to Robbinsville and made for a great mom’s day present for Kathy.
Sean flashed some long smiles throughout the day. Perhaps the biggest smile came when Nancy mispronounced Mark Teixeira’s name. I think she called him Texas-Era. He may have hit three home runs in a game but he is still a Yankee and we Met fans have no need for correct pronunciations of their silly names. But, to see Sean smile was a wonderful thing.
Sean is eating really well and seems to be maintaining a good weight. He continues to work hard at his speech therapy and has been seen mouthing words but not yet able to generate sounds. He is also working out daily with his physical therapist and continues to take small but meaningful steps towards better mobility.
As was posted, please check with Frank or Kathy before attempting a visit this week. Sean has a lot going on and not a lot of free time for visits.

Friday Afternoon, April 30
Sean was out and about last weekend as Frank and Kathy smuggled him home for the day on Saturday. The doctors gave permission late in the week for Sean to take a day trip and he jumped at the chance. While home, Sean kicked back in the family room and ate up some grilled cheese sandwiches made by brother Tim (Tim has a limited repertoire in the kitchen but grilled cheeses are a specialty). It was good quality time for Sean and you could see by the look on his face that he was happy to be back in Robbinsville and in the comfort of home. Unfortunately, Frank and Kathy did have to return him to Kessler later that night. Here is to hoping the visits home get longer and longer.
Sean continues his daily regiment of physical therapy and speech therapy. He continues to take small but significant steps to work his way back.
As always, keep the visits and the prayers coming.

Tuesday Afternoon, April 20
Sean is continuing to eat better and put on weight. He fights through his therapy sessions and progress is very slow but steady. I was able to watch a little of his physical therapy session this weekend and viewed some film footage of another session. With the help of his therapists, Sean uses parallel bars to pull himself to his feet. Taking a step is a difficult task for Sean to undertake and he needs the therapists help to put weight on one foot in order to stride with the other. The effort is definitely there and hopefully with some more work Sean can keep progressing towards moving on his own.
Sean continues to communicate with hand signals and charts, but is still struggling with speaking. Again, hopefully his hard work with the speech therapists will pay off some time in the near future.
Sean thanks everyone for their cards and gifts and cake and balloons (well actually Shea and Haley thank you for those) that he received on his birthday last week. A special thanks to Ann Lorenzo for the somewhat disturbing drawing of Jack Bauer (from “24”)…..I think its Sean’s fave gift.
