Sean Update 12/13/10

Sean and the entire Nemazie family would like to wish everyone Happy Holidays!

We would like to thank Don Demkovitz and the Board of Robbinsville Basketball Association for their continued efforts at fundraising on Sean’s behalf. Last weekend, RBA set up tables at each of its venues to collect donations for Sean. As always, the Robbinsville community came through. Don delivered over $2,000 to the Nemazie family! Thanks again to RBA and to all who donated. It is truly heartwarming to witness the tireless support that has been given to Sean and the Nemazie's. Whether it has been in the form of donations, deeds, or just well wishing, it has provided Frank and Kathy the tools to help Sean as best they can.

Sean has had a good month. He has fully recovered from surgery he underwent in late October. Time has shown that the surgery was a success and doctors have seen a noted improvement in Sean’s mobility and his ability to speak. Sean is able to play video games as a therapy for hand eye coordination. This is a skill he would not been able to do just a month ago. I am still fairly certain he couldn’t beat me in Mario Baseball but who can. He has also spent more time walking…still with help…but getting better all the time.

This past weekend, Sean had a visit from his buddies from University of Delaware. They are a great group of young men with great outlook on life. It is easy to see why Sean connected with them. He thoroughly enjoyed their visit. Come back soon guys.

This has been a very difficult year to say the least. Thanks to all of you for being there for Sean, Frank, Kathy, and Timmy. When we all look back on where Sean was almost a year ago to where he is now, it is truly amazing. Sean is an inspiration and we are so grateful to have him in our lives. Enjoy the holidays!

More to come in 2011…..Steve

Tuesday, November 16

Lets catch up on the last month with Sean….

The highlight was certainly a trip to see the Giants – Lions game on 10/17. The troupe of Frank, Kathy, Sean, Timmy, Nancy and Ryan (one of two Lions fans in Robbinsville….shout out to Ryan Mayer holding down the other Lion Backer seat) arrived in the Meadowlands parking lot at about 10:30am. Frank did an awesome job of tailgating--complete with burgers, dogs, sausages and of course--beer (which Kathy and Nancy dove right in to despite that it was pre-noon). Sean had great seats in the end zone to watch the Giants (barely) beat the Lions and it seemed as though Sean enjoyed the whole experience.
Sean’s speech therapist said Sean told her that his weekend was awesome!

The Nemazie gang also took a ride down to UD the following weekend to meet up with a few of his friends for lunch at a pizzeria and then went to their dorm to see a lot of other friends from his Freshman year. They were all so excited to see him and he hung out in their dorm room for a couple of hours (sans parents of course). They also met up with Mike Lorenzo, Katie Noonan and Jenna Lesniak from RHS who also go to UD.

Sean had surgery on 10/28 to put a shunt in and it was successful but it did take him a week or two to recover from the headaches and nausea. He's back on his feet now and in a full schedule of therapy but has had a bit of a setback with his speech. His speech therapist now gives him homework which usually consists of logic problems that he has to handwrite the answers to. He has also made some progress with transfers on his own--standing up by himself to go from the wheelchair to the bed or chair. He's also got a good handle on dressing himself now and has even been able to tie his shoes. He also has a leg brace for the right leg to help with the foot drop when walking.

That is all for now. Sean wishes everybody a Happy Thanksgiving!

More to come….Steve

Sean Update 10/18/10

If you haven’t been able to catch up with Sean recently, you should make a point to swing on by JFK or check with Frank and Kathy on when he may be home. He looks great! I had the pleasure of spending the day/night with Sean on Saturday at the Nemazie household. The bad news is that I felt obliged to watch the Yankees with him. The good news is that the Rangers scored more runs than the mighty Yanks, thus winning the game. And then further proof of God’s existence…..the Phillies game was not aired due to a cable dispute. So, for one night, I was able to just think about my Mets and imagine that they may someday again play in October.

Sean’s speech has improved incredibly. He speaks softly and it takes effort to produce the words still, but a major breakthrough in what Frank and Kathy have called “a great month”. He is able to vocalize his thoughts and you can just tell what a relief it is to him. He seemed to be smiling the whole day.

In addition to his speech, Sean’s mobility and strength have made some real positive strides. With some help getting up and Kathy under his arm to stabilize him, Sean walked from the family to the living room. Later that night, with Frank’s assistance, Sean made his way down stairs to the game room (his first time making that journey since the accident). After hanging with Tim and attempting to play some Xbox, Frank helped Sean back up the stairs. He even made his way to the back door to say good night a small crew that was hanging in the back yard.

Here’s to a great month and many more to come.

September 29, 2010

The improvement in Sean’s mobility took a couple strange turns over the past couple weeks. A few weeks ago he was walking very well (with assistance from the JFK staff) and then he had a bad week where progress seemed to stop. But, this past week, Sean came through and seems to be back on track. He was walking around the Nemazie house with assistance. So, progress is slow and sometimes requires lots of patience, but it is coming.

As far as his vision goes, he had an eye doctor appt last night and there was a marked improvement in getting that left eye to come in so the glasses seem to be helping him. He still sees double but things are improving slowly.

He got a new phone (with a keyboard) a week ago and is texting on his own now. I've noticed that he seems to be using his laptop more--checking Facebook and his fantasy football league. So, text Sean or hit him up on Facebook…he is awaiting contact.

Sean came home for his first overnight visit on Saturday 9/18. He did really well sleeping in his own bed for the first time since January (it was the first time he's actually been upstairs in the Nemazie house). He told Kathy that he was so glad to be home. They are hoping to do as many of those as they can especially around the holidays.

He also had a visit on Sunday 9/19 from three friends from UD. He really looked forward to their visit and they sat outside on the patio talking about school, eating pizza, and then watched some football. I used to think all they had down there at UD was memories of Joe Flacco. I’m really starting to like you folks.

Sean's visit to Yankee stadium was quite a hit up at JFK. Kathy put the pictures of him with Jeter, A-rod, Mariano, and Pettitte up on his door and it was the topic of conversation for a good week. People were asking to take some of the pictures. One of the aides took the one with Sean, Tim and Jeter and told Kathy she put it in a frame and has it on top of her TV! The staff at JFK was very appreciative that they did this for Sean and want to send a letter to the Yankees organization to thank them.

10 September 2010

Here is a really good picture of Sean just after we told him he was going to be on the field to watch batting practice.
He seems excited.

Sean Update 9/10/2010

As promised, a pretty cool Sean update! This past Saturday the entire Nemazie family went to the Yankees game……wait, let me start from the beginning….

About 2 years ago my wife Nancy served a man wearing a large World Series ring at the restaurant (Amarones) she works at. Never being one to hold her tongue, Nancy asked where the man got his ring. As it turns out, the man is Lonn Trost, the Chief Operating Officer for the New York Yankees. Nancy went on to tell Lonn that I was a life long Mets fan, so he doesn’t really speak to me. But, since then Nancy has seen and spoken to Lonn many times.

After Sean’s accident, Nancy asked the bartender, Tom, at Amarones to speak to Lonn (everyone loves bartenders) and see if he could get Sean an autograph or something. Time passed and no word came from Lonn. But, then about two weeks ago Nancy found out that Frank had acquired tickets to the Yanks game for this past Saturday. Low and behold, Lonn showed up for dinner at the restaurant. Tom reminded Lonn of Sean’s story while he enjoyed a pre-dinner cocktail.

A few days before the game, Lonn called Frank and invited the entire Nemazie family to be a guest of the Yankees on the field before their game against the Blue Jays. Not knowing how much they would see or how close they would be to the players, Frank and Kathy decided not to tell Sean too much on game day for fear that it may not be too big a deal and didn’t want to get his hopes up. But things worked out better than they could have imagined…..Sean was able meet and shake hands with Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Andy Petite, Mariano Rivera, and others. They were able to remain on the field for batting practice (which proved to be slightly better hitting than at the C’mon Sean Home Run Derby). The weather was perfect and I think the Yanks went on to win the game as well.

All in all, a great day for Sean…. And for at least a day, even I was a Yankee fan.

If you visit Amarones, be sure to tip Tom well….besides being a great guy, he makes a stiff drink.

Sean Update 9/2/10

Ok folks, I got the message…..too much time between blogs! It was summer and I got lazy…..back at work and back to the blog now. I will try to update every few weeks.

Keep an eye out for a special blog next week hopefully with pictures. That’s all I can say….been sworn to secrecy.

Sean has had a good summer. He has settled in to his new digs at Hartwyck in Edison and has become comfortable with getting around the halls in his wheelchair and working with the staff. Sean comes home almost every weekend these days. If you want to see him, please let Kathy or Frank know ahead of time. And bring food….the cupboards are getting bare. Last time I was there, Frank gave me an Old Milwaukee and a can of Spaghetti-Os. No offense to our young friends out there but I did my time at college and now have higher demanding taste buds.

The Nemazies have been taking Sean to the movies and dinner frequently as well. Most recently Sean went to see Inception and followed that up with renting Shutter Island with Timmy at his house. Despite taking in the two most confusing movies in recent history, Sean stayed focused and was able to follow all the plot twists. Eating wise, his motor skills are always improving….long gone are the days of having to help him eat….he does fine by himself now.

Sean recently was fitted for a pair of special glasses to help his vision by trying to get both his eyes moving in sync. They seem to be working well but it is another long path for Sean.

While vision and his cognitive skills continue to improve, his ability to talk and walk continue to be a battle. He is able to mouth words and sometimes get words out but it takes a big effort. Still, it is getting better and if we look back just a few months ago when there were not even attempts to talk, the progress is huge. Sean continues his physical therapy and there are subtle improvements in moving his legs but for now he is getting used to maneuvering his wheelchair.

As I said, check back next week for what should be something pretty sweet for Old Seanie!

Sean Update 8/3/10

Sorry for the lack of updates! It is summer what can I say…

For those of you who were not able to make it, the “C’mon Sean Home Run Derby” was amazing. I believe at last count the event raised about $7K. Kudos to Courtney and Brittany DeAngelis for organizing everything and making it memorable. A lot more folks provided support including the rest of the DeAngelis family, the Lorenzo family, all the old geezers who helped set up and took the mound one last time to pitch in the home run contest, and Pasquale and Claudine DeChiara, owners of the Bijou Salon who were among the first to offer their time and donations. There were many others who helped out as well. To these people and all who donated in one way or another…..THANK YOU!

In the HR contest, young Tyler Kostin won the 8-12 year old division to begin the festivities. In the 13-17 year old division A division (on Field 1), big Nate Smith took home the trophy and looked good doing it. In the 13-17 B division (on Field 2), Ryan Krebs defeated Harrison Flyge in stirring playoff. The 18-21 year old division saw Shae Fahey make a brief return to the diamond to defeat a star studded cast and claim the prize. And in the grand finale, in a performance for the ages…or aged as it would be…yours truly ignited the crowd (which at this point was my daughters and some kid from down the block) and won the adult division.

But, of course, the star of the show was our own Sean, who spent a good part of the day hanging out, greeting folks and woofing down Lorenzo pulled pork sandwiches.

In addition to the Home Run Derby, there was another fundraiser held at Via Roma restaurant the following week when they donated a percentage of their revenue from one night’s sales to the Nemazie family. Many thanks to Via Roma as well!

Sean is doing well. He is still working hard and slowly making strides each day. He has begun speaking (a little bit). He is able to mouth most words and sometimes is audible. He continues his daily physical therapy at Hartwyck and works on his mobility. Sean has also been active and he gets out to dinner and movies with Kathy and Frank every now and again.

Thanks again for everyone’s support.

More to come…..Steve

Monday Afternoon, July 5

Sean celebrated the 4th of July holiday with a visit to a relative's house for a barbeque. While there, Sean not only ate and socialized with fellow partygoers but went for a ride on a boat!

I was able to see Sean yesterday before he left for the BBQ and he is doing really well. A couple of major improvements since I last spent time with him. He is holding his head upright all the time now. He looks at you when you are speaking with him and responds quickly via hand signals. He is also able to move himself around in his wheelchair via use of his left foot. He is moving slow but he is moving!

Nancy gave Sean some apple pie which was odd because it was 10am and Sean was going to a BBQ but that is my wife's style.....rocking the boat. Anyhow, Sean devoured the pie in no time. His appetite is definitely very good.

Still allot of work to do but the folks at Hartwyck seem to be picking up right where Kessler left off and Sean continues to work hard at regaining his skills.

More to come....Steve

Sean Update 6/16/10

Sean will be moving out of Kessler tomorrow (Thursday 6/17) for another rehab facility. Once he is settled in, we will get everyone the specifics on location and visiting hours.

When Sean first entered Kessler over 4 months ago, he was not conscious and it was uncertain when he would regain consciousness. In his time there Sean of course, did wake up, learned how to communicate using hand signals, learned how to eat and feed himself again, brought his weight from 115 lbs to about 135 lbs now, watched too much tv, met Gloria Gaynor and the Indian from the Village People (ok, I guess that was cooler for the older folks who happened to be there), began using charts to spell out words and sentences, began to use his laptop again, made strides in learning to walk and talk again, learned to smile and made us smile again.

From the bottom of all of our hearts and especially Frank and Kathy, we thank the incredible staff at Kessler
and especially Jodi, Mara & Liz. Sean will miss you all so much. Someday, he will walk in and thank you himself.

More to come soon from Sean’s new crib!

Sean will not be at Kessler on Sunday (30 May), please consider visiting on another day. Thanks...

Monday afternoon, May 25

Sean has fully recovered from surgery performed a little more than a week ago. Without going in to too much detail, the staff at Helene Fuld were able to re-connect some pieces of Sean that they had borrowed about 4 months ago. Sean’s noggin is once again well rounded.

Sean has since been transported back to Kessler and his progress continues to be slow and steady. His cognitive skills are very sharp. You can talk to Sean about any subject and he quickly and decisively absorbs and responds. Physically, he is still struggling with use of his legs, his right hand, and speaking. He is working very hard on all though.

This weekend, Frank, Kathy and Tim were able to take Sean out to lunch at a nearby restaurant down the road from Kessler. My little friend Haley and I greeted them upon their return from lunch. Sean recognized us from about 50 feet away and gave a big wave. He was able to help out a little by moving his legs when Frank shifted him from the car to the wheelchair. Inside, one of Sean’s therapists asked Sean what he had for lunch. After a brief pause, Sean mouthed the words “cheeseburger”. He wasn’t able to produce a sound but all else looked good.

On my way out, Sean shook my hand, with his RIGHT HAND.

Keep it up Seanster.

Monday Morning, May 10

Sean spent the better part of Mother’s Day at home. He seemed very happy to be there as he reclined on the Lazy Boy. We were lucky enough to get by and hang with the Nemazie's and eat some pizza and pastries. Kathy and Frank were really glad that Sean was allowed to make the trip to Robbinsville and made for a great mom’s day present for Kathy.

Sean flashed some long smiles throughout the day. Perhaps the biggest smile came when Nancy mispronounced Mark Teixeira’s name. I think she called him Texas-Era. He may have hit three home runs in a game but he is still a Yankee and we Met fans have no need for correct pronunciations of their silly names. But, to see Sean smile was a wonderful thing.

Sean is eating really well and seems to be maintaining a good weight. He continues to work hard at his speech therapy and has been seen mouthing words but not yet able to generate sounds. He is also working out daily with his physical therapist and continues to take small but meaningful steps towards better mobility.

As was posted, please check with Frank or Kathy before attempting a visit this week. Sean has a lot going on and not a lot of free time for visits.

Friday Afternoon, May 7

Special request from the Nemazie family:

Please call Frank or Kathy first before visiting Sean from 9-16 May (Sunday to Sunday) as his schedule will be in flux. Thanks!!!

Friday Afternoon, April 30

Sean was out and about last weekend as Frank and Kathy smuggled him home for the day on Saturday. The doctors gave permission late in the week for Sean to take a day trip and he jumped at the chance. While home, Sean kicked back in the family room and ate up some grilled cheese sandwiches made by brother Tim (Tim has a limited repertoire in the kitchen but grilled cheeses are a specialty). It was good quality time for Sean and you could see by the look on his face that he was happy to be back in Robbinsville and in the comfort of home. Unfortunately, Frank and Kathy did have to return him to Kessler later that night. Here is to hoping the visits home get longer and longer.

Sean continues his daily regiment of physical therapy and speech therapy. He continues to take small but significant steps to work his way back.

As always, keep the visits and the prayers coming.

More to come…..Steve

Friday Morning, April 23

Special request from the Nemazie family. Please DO NOT visit Sean on Saturday (24 April), but Sunday is fine. Thanks!!!

Tuesday Afternoon, April 20

Sean is continuing to eat better and put on weight. He fights through his therapy sessions and progress is very slow but steady. I was able to watch a little of his physical therapy session this weekend and viewed some film footage of another session. With the help of his therapists, Sean uses parallel bars to pull himself to his feet. Taking a step is a difficult task for Sean to undertake and he needs the therapists help to put weight on one foot in order to stride with the other. The effort is definitely there and hopefully with some more work Sean can keep progressing towards moving on his own.

Sean continues to communicate with hand signals and charts, but is still struggling with speaking. Again, hopefully his hard work with the speech therapists will pay off some time in the near future.

Sean thanks everyone for their cards and gifts and cake and balloons (well actually Shea and Haley thank you for those) that he received on his birthday last week. A special thanks to Ann Lorenzo for the somewhat disturbing drawing of Jack Bauer (from “24”)…..I think its Sean’s fave gift.

More to come,
Steve

Monday afternoon, April 12

Sean’s week was brightened by the presence of Aunt Leslie who flew in from Texas to spend some quality time with the Seanster.  Leslie was a welcomed relief from all the Nemazie men…..much better looking and she didn’t drink as much of my beer supply at Frank and Kathys….lol….just kidding guys.

Seriously, Sean was in very good spirits seeing Aunt Leslie and with her help, he stepped up and worked hard in his therapy sessions once again.  He continues to eat better and regain some weight which seems to be translating in to more strength in physical therapy.  Although Sean has not spoken yet, in speech therapy he continues to show positive signs that his mind is functioning well.

A shout out from the Nemazies to Casey McGuigan who has grabbed the title of MFV (most frequent visitor).  I don’t know if this means Casey is missing classes over at William Paterson, but Sean and the Nemazies appreciate your company…..keep it up KC!.  Side note:  this is not an official award and carries with it no prize or sum of money, so need to start collecting visitor passes to prove your number of visits!

Finally, this Friday, Sean will celebrate his 19th birthday.  While Kessler may not be where he anticipating being on this big day, we are all so thankful for Sean being with us and know that there are many, many great and healthier birthdays to come. Happy birthday Sean!!!

Monday, April 5

Sean enjoyed Easter Sunday with family and friends. Aunt Jeanne and Uncle Blair brought their family to town. Jeanne destroyed my diet with her apple pie which I resisted most of the day but finally couldn’t hold back anymore. Sean fell victim to the allure to the pie as well. What do you put in that? Man that is good. Ok, enough about the pie.

The Lorenzo Pulled Pork was also on the menu. However, due to Parkway traffic, it seemed to be all gone by the time the Krebs family arrived. While Sean has gotten a bit quicker, he was not able to wipe the evidence of BBQ sauce from around his mouth in time.

Unfortunately, Sean’s Easter ended on a bad note, when the Yankees fell to the Sox in the season opener. But, as I reminded Sean, today when the Mets take the field, he can be reminded what a real baseball team looks like, which is sure to lift his spirits.

Sean is still progressing at a slow but steady pace. I hadn’t been up to see him in nearly two weeks and there was a marked improvement in his hand eye coordination. He is able to feed himself and drink from a cup much better than he had a couple weeks ago when it was a struggle and Frank/Kathy had to help. He is definitely fighting to reclaim his independence and making great strides.

His eyes appear better although he signaled that he was still struggling with his vision. His eye doctor will soon fit him with special glasses to use as therapy for correcting the issues.

The biggest news of the week came in physical therapy when Sean was able to pull himself up by a bar showing that his strength is returning as well.

It has been just three months since the accident. Sean’s progress from those first days at Helene Fuld Hospital to now at Kessler is remarkable but not surprising. Sean is fighting this battle like a champion and will win. It is a long and hard road but Frank and Kathy are strong and continually revitalized by all of your spirit. Keep up the fight.

Tuesday, March 30

While you are thinking and pulling for Sean…..

Please take time this week to give your thoughts and prayers to the Muzaffar family. Tragedy struck Robbinsville again this weekend as Qasim (Q), a freshman standout student athlete at RHS and his younger brother, lost their lives while visiting family in Pakistan. No words can express the magnitude of this loss.

Monday afternoon, March 22

Sean worked hard all week in therapy including some weekend sessions.  During one of his physical therapy sessions this week, Sean was lifted from his chair and, with allot of help from the staff at Kessler, took about 20 steps.  The therapists are pushing Sean hard to continually improve and he has responded.  Slowly but surely, he is regaining command of his body.

Sean continues to work at eating and putting on weight.  He has made a point to feed himself throughout his meals.  And, although it takes some time, he fights through and has been able to get more and more food down.  He has also begun using a straw for his drinks….something he was not able to do a week ago.

Many thanks to those of you who contributed to the “Sean Storybook” that was put together so creatively by Jodi Mindnich for the Nemazies.  The compilation of funny, heart warming stories about Sean, has brought Frank and Kathy allot laughs and smiles.  It has also served as another reminder as to how lucky we all are to have Sean in our lives and how important his recovery is to everybody.

Lets all hope for another good week and more good news to come.

Steve

Tuesday, March 16, 2010

Monday Afternoon, March 15

There was heavy traffic at Kessler this weekend. Despite the hurricane conditions blowing through NJ, Sean had allot of spring breaking visitors as well as older folks. He is definitely energized by seeing everyone so keep it coming.

Sean had an eye exam this week and it went pretty well. There are some issues especially with his left eye but all these seem correctable per the eye doctor.

Sean is continuing to work on his eating. Meals still take quite a while to get through but Sean is working hard to get some weight back on. He is drinking much better and has begun using a straw which he was not previously able to do.

Sean also seems to be building some strength and is using his arms to move and adjust himself in his bed. The therapists also say that he is helping them more by using his arms and legs more as they move him around during PT sessions.

In case you haven’t heard, there are now “C’mon Sean” bracelets (I think that is what they are called….the kind that Lance Armstrong started with “Livestrong”) circulating around. Any one with info on whether these are called bracelets and info on who started this craze, feel free to respond. Extra bracelets (or whatever) to the winner. Anyhow, thanks to Sean’s Aunt Leslie and Uncle Martin for organizing, designing and shipping these. They are even done in Raven colors and have Sean’s name on the inside…..nice job Leslie and Martin! We are working on how to get these out to all that have shown their support for Sean. For now, I think they are only available at the Nemazie house and the hospital. Stay tuned….we are working on it.

More to come…..Steve

Monday morning, March 8

Sean continues to make strides and steadily improve each day.

He is eating better and has begun to feed himself which shows improvement in his hand eye coordination.  He is communicating with hand signals, speech boards, letter boards, and most recently, via typing questions/comments in Microsoft Word.  We were able to get Sean setup with his laptop this weekend and it further proved that his mind is working well.  He immediately maneuvered around his desktop pulling up various programs and rummaging through his files.  He was also able to pull up a game of Icy Tower and play a bit.

Sean is still working on using his right hand (he has been primarily using his left for everything) and his legs.  His physical therapy this week included riding on a stationary bike for short periods.  Sean was able to pedal on his own for up to 7 minutes.

If you are visiting Sean, be aware that he is seeing well out of his right eye but is struggling a bit with vision in his left eye.  So, if you want to show him a picture or have him read something, show him from the right side.

Kathy was able to push Sean around outside for a bit this weekend.  Of course, the steep hills of Kessler proved to be quite a challenge for Kathleen.  Upon their return to the room, Sean looked quite content for having been able to soak in some sun.  Kathy looked a bit like she had been through an olympic workout and immediately inquired about a motorized wheelchair for her next stroll.

More to come…..Steve

Monday, March 1, 2010

Monday Evening, March 1

Sean continues to work hard to regain all his abilities.

He is still re-learning his eating/swallowing skills. It is a long process for Sean to get some food down, but he is fighting through.  Hopefully, soon things will come easier and Sean will be able to gain back some of the weight he has lost.

With a bunch of help, Sean was lifted to his feet this week and began to undertake the long process of learning to walk again. Through hand signals and spelling out of words with a letter board, Sean has expressed his determination to get back on his feet.

The progress is slow but it is also steady. One thing for certain is that Sean’s cognitive skills are in tact and he is able to process information and respond to questions quickly. He has also begun to show slight facial expressions and responds with a smile to humor (mind you, it has to actually be funny….some of my material drew a blank stare…understandable).

A highlight of the week came yesterday when Mike Rubenstein orchestrated a game of blackjack in the main waiting room with Sean, Timmy, Steve, and Shawn. Sean was right on his game. Asking for a card or holding via hand signals in a quick and decisive manner. Had there been some cash involved, I am pretty sure Sean would have cleaned up on the group of rookies. Nice work Mike….it was a really neat scene to see Sean hanging with the boys again.

A housekeeping note: As Sean regains his faculties and begins this difficult task of learning to do the simple things again, a situation may occur when he will need some privacy with Frank and/or Kathy or a Kessler staff member (for example when he is eating, moving from the bed to the wheelchair (or vice versa), getting a check up, going to the bathroom, etc). Please just be aware of this on your visits and ask Frank and Kathy if you need to step out of the room when necessary.

More to come soon….Steve

This week, I received this email from Jamie Langsdorf, a Robbinsville resident:

Steve:
The RBA – Pump It Up Fundraiser took place last night.  We had a great turnout (83 kids).  Through the help of the coaches, my wife and kids, Erin Calabro and many others (obviously including the Owners of Pump It Up – Nancy and Jim Cavalo) we were able to raise approx. $1000.
I will give Don D. the poster board which all of the kids signed for Sean, print out the photos that were taken and the money this week.  I know that you are very close with the family, so I’d appreciate it if you could give it to the Nemazie family on behalf of the RBA and Pump It Up.
Thanks. I've included a photo of the kids.

To Jamie, his family, Erin, Don, the Robbinsville Basketball Association Board and Coaches….THANK YOU!  The Nemazies are absolutely blown away by your thoughtfulness and generosity. I know you were not looking for any fanfare or publicity on this selfless and generous act… but I felt it warranted everyone knowing.

Also, to Nancy and Jim Cavalo and the staff at Pump It Up (the inflatable party zone), many thanks! Frank and Kathy have promised to come bounce around for a while if they can do so without breaking anything.  Someday soon we hope, Sean will be in there doing backflips!

Sean is having another productive week. He is eating pretty regularly (nothing solid yet…but he is getting there). There was also a report of him playing blackjack with his therapist and winning!  He continues to work hard in his physical therapy and slowly but surely is getting stronger.

More to come….  Steve

SAUCY!

Shout out to the talented teens from Robbinsville High!

Alright, Sean fans.... a new blog bonus has been added to the right, under his pic. His good friends wrote and produced the song in his honor. I'm thinking if you don't get the meaning, just go with the chorus...  C'mon Sean!

(It takes a minute to load, but worth the wait). It makes great background music while you catch up on the blog and leave your encouraging comments.

His recovery is gaining momentum, now. So keep those prayers going!

Friday Evening, February 19

It has been another good week for Sean!  He had very productive sessions in physical therapy.  He has begun to read letters and words off a board and understand what they said.  In one session, Sean's therapist asked him to point to spell out the name of a friend who had just been to see him.  Sean pointed to the letters M-I-K-E, referring to Mike Lorenzo who had been out to see him the day before.

Sean has also begun working with moving and stacking small blocks to continue to develop and relearn the use of his hands.

Later in the week, Sean was driven back to Mercer County to see Dr. Vez who had attended to Sean in his stay at Helene Fuld and had performed operations on Sean in the first couple days at the hospital. Dr. Vez felt that Sean was moving ahead at a very good rate.

On another note, I recieved an email today with a song written and performed by Brandon Fleming, Freddie Ulisse, and the aforementioned Mike Lorenzo about Sean. (I pride myself in my collection of Celine Dion, Donna Summer and Andy Gibb CDs, so it wasn't quite my style. BUT, it is very well done and if you prefer Little Wayne to Wayne Newton, you will dig it). Good hustle guys.  Let me know if you want to go public with that tune....it would make a nice fundraiser!

Keep up the good work Sean.

More good news to come.....Steve

Heart-warming article on Sean in the Robbinsville Advance

A new link has been posted in the right-side column. It's an article written by Rob Anthes for the Robbinsville Advance about the fundraiser Sean's alma mater held for his family. Click on the link and take a look. Anthes truly captured the emotion of the evening. Photos from the event accompanying the article are by Suzette J. Lucas.

Tuesday afternoon, February 16

This weekend was an exciting and uplifting one for Sean and the Nemazie clan!  Sean made some huge breakthroughs and has definitely begun his road back.  Nancy and I were up at Kessler to visit Sean early Sunday morning.  As many of you know, neither Sean nor Timmy nor Kathy for that matter, are “morning people”.  Frank is the only one you can talk to in that family before noon.  Anyhow, Sean may not have been happy to see us wander in his room at about 8am, but like the well mannered young man that he is, he stayed awake while we bugged him with questions and stories.

Sean is definitely out of the minimally conscious state and is fully conscious As stated in the previous update, he is answering questions (when he chooses to) with hand signals.  And he answers in a quick manner which has shown that he is processing information quickly.  He is aware of his surroundings and has responded that he is aware that he was in an accident and that he knows where he is.  His eyes will focus on you when you are speaking to him (most of the time).

BUT…..this is not to say that he is alert at all times and, he still remains unable to talk or show expression in his face.  Sean remains in either his bed or his wheelchair as he does not have control of moving his legs or his arms (beyond hand signals) yet.

Sean still has a lot of work ahead of him and bunch of walls to break down……so keep the prayers and the support coming strong.

A special thank you to Sean’s Uncle Steve who returned to Florida on Sunday.  It is no coincidence that Sean progressed so greatly during your stay here in NJ.  Your positive spirit and energy came at just the right time.  Enjoy the sunshine down there (for a little while) and come back soon!!!!

More to come!      ….Steve

Friday Morning, February 12

Some really great news came in from Kessler this morning!

Sean’s therapist called Frank very excited to tell him that Sean is communicating via hand signals.  They have taught Sean to use his hands to signal yes and no.

The therapist asked Sean 20 questions this morning and Sean answered all 20 correctly!

She did throw in some curve balls to try and trick Sean.  She asked if he grew up in Newark and Sean signaled “no”.  She asked if Sean grew up in Trenton and Sean signaled “no”.  She asked if Sean grew up in Robbinsville and Sean signaled “yes”.  She asked Sean if he knew he was at Kessler and Sean signaled “yes”.  She asked if Sean was in any pain and Sean signaled “no”.

If you want a complete list of the 20 questions and Sean’s responses, please ask Frank (JUST KIDDING!!!!!.....don’t bug Frankie for details).

Sean’s eyes were wide open during this morning’s session also…..which he has been doing more often.

Sean still has a long way to go, BUT this is a big step and hopefully the first of many breakthroughs.

Way to go Sean!!!

More to come soon.  Steve

Saturday Night, February 6

Sean's Uncle Steve arrived from Florida this week and has spent alot of time with Sean at Kessler. Last night, Steve spent the night with Sean and stayed with him all day today.

Steve was very upbeat about his time with Sean. Sean showed signs of movement with his arms when reacting to touching. Steve was able to get Sean to engage in a little game of tug-o-war with a sock. Sean also began blinking his eyes when asked questions. Maybe a little of that Florida magic was just what the doctor ordered.

Sean's therapists and doctors remain positive although Sean is not awake or fully conscious yet. When asked if they thought he is where he should be progress-wise, the doctor responded that "it is never as fast a recovery as we want it to be". He went on to say that he has seen patients recover faster and he has seen patients recover slower....everybody is different.

Lets all keep praying that the road Sean is on is the road to full recovery.

More to come......Steve

Sunday Night, January 31st

Sean's physcial therapist, Jodi, is very excited about the progress that he has shown from day to day.  In one session near the end of the week, Sean pushed her hand away from his shoulder as she was massaging some tightness out of it.  This is a good sign that his motor skills and reactionary skills are improving.

Jodi went so far as to request that Frank and Kathy allow her to film Sean for future patients in physical therapy who are recovering from a similar injury.  She said that she feels he is the ideal patient for this type of treatment and is very enthusiastic about his recovery.

Sean is keeping his eyes open for large parts of the day.  He is not focusing well on anything but does blink at times when a hand is waved in front of him.

Sean has yet to say any words but has progressed fairly well in speech therapy.  Currently they are working on his ability to swallow again with the goal of allowing him to eat and drink eventually.

I may be wrong but I sense Sean's first words since the accident may come soon and I personally am pulling for....."GO COLTS".....but even "GO SAINTS" would be fine with me.

Keep praying and lets pull for a real good week!!!

More to come soon.....Steve

Wednesday Morning, January 27

The doctors at Kessler believe Sean is progressing.  The therapist said that a test showed more alertness as compared to a week ago.  All seemed encouraged and excited that he will become much more responsive soon.

Notes on visitation at Kessler:

1. Visiting Hours are 8am to 8:30pm

2. Sean does physical therapy from 10:30am to 12pm and 2:30pm to 4pm. Visitors can not see him at those times, so plan around those times.

Frank and Kathy may not be around when you are up at Kessler to see Sean.  So, they have asked that you please try to stick to the above times.  Also, try to watch how many folks are in the room at once and the duration of time you are in the room.  The docs don’t want too much activity in the room.  But, definitely keep coming!!!

SHOUT OUT OF THE DAY... to Frank and Kathy’s employers and co-workers.  During this tough period following the accident, these folks have gone above and beyond all expectations.  Thanks to all of you for your understanding, compassion and flexibility in allowing the Nemazies to take care of their family.  Frank and Kathy promise they will work in to their 70s to repay you all (just kidding).

More to come…

Photos from Friday Night's Event

We thought it was about time to liven up Sean's blog with a few photos!

Friday night was an exciting night for the Nemazie's and the Robbinsville Ravens. Tim played hard and contributed to the freshman team's win over Princeton:

Amidst a full house and a standing ovation, Kathy and Tim graciously accepted the generous donations to their travel costs. A Robbinsville art teacher gave a beautiful drawing of Sean to the family.

Kathy shows off a poster some of Sean's classmates put together for his room at Kessler.

Sean Update 1/23/10

A huge thank you from Frank and Kathy to RHS and the Robbinsville Community for last night's RHS basketball that served as a benefit for the Nemazie family. The outpouring of support was simply amazing. The Nemazies were given a check for over $4,000!!! $1,000 from the gate and the other $3,000+ from donations...that is incredible. And there is more still coming in. They were also given a portrait of Sean drawn by the RHS art teacher. Words cannot express their gratitude. They are deeply touched and are so happy and proud to be part of the community of Robbinsville.

The team fought hard but lost. A few of Sean's patented 3-pointers would have come in handy.

Shout Out of the Day to RHS Athletic Director Curtis Wyers who spoke so eloquently and accurately about Sean and the kind of person he is. Many of Sean's family was present at the game including grandparents, aunts and uncles. They were very thankful for your kind words.

Sean's condition has not changed. He is not yet conscious but seems to be opening his eyes more and more frequently. His body movement seems to be a little more frequent as well.

Sean finished his first full week of physical therapy to keep his body moving and blood flowing to all limbs. The doctors seem happy with his progress thus far. But, there is a long way to go.

As always, keep the thoughts and prayers coming strong for Sean, Frank, Kathy and Timmy.

More to come....   Steve

Wednesday Evening, January 20

This a live update from the 3rd floor lounge at Kessler.

Sean's condition remains the same although he continues to make small strides in his therapy sessions. He responds to commands to raise his fingers, blink and slightly open his eyes, and wave to only Nancy (we don't understand it either).

Sorry I missed a day. But, the updates to the blog may not be daily as the progress is going to be slow (steady but slow). Don't panic if you don't see something for a day or two. There are times when there is not a lot to report. But, rest assured that Sean is working hard and Frank and Kathy are with him every step of the way. This is a long road for the Nemazie family but their faith is strong and I know all of yours will remain strong as well until Sean is home and back to full health.

Don't forget the RHS basketball game this Friday night at 7pm. The proceeds from which will be graciously donated to the Nemazie family.

More to come soon....Steve
